1/11/2015-R.I.P. MARK ALVERSON(PHOTO) - Mark was the mate on the Headboat "Miss Oregon Inlet" that is docked next to me.  I was lucky enough to get to know him.  Mark was one of those rare people that always lifted the spirit of everyone around him.  One of the nicest guys that I have ever met.  The fish were not biting the bucktails too good the day he landed the one above.  When we saw it, I told him not to cast on it and wait for an eel as I was frantically try to get an one on the hook for him.  Mark tried to wait on me, but it was taking me forever.  Several times he said "are you sure?" and I said "wait on the eel I almost have it ready."  The fish turned and started swimming toward the boat and was getting closer and closer.  Mark couldn't take it as I was struggling to get the damn thing on the hook and the fish was almost to the boat.  He casted.  As Mark's bucktail hit the water and sunk next to the fish, I told him that it wasn't going to eat it and it was going to spook it from eating the eel that I finally had ready for him.  The fish ate the bucktail and the hazing of the captain began.  I do not know how many times since he and I shared a laugh about that moment.  I am laughing right now thinking about it.  I am so glad that Mark casted that bucktail that day and I am so lucky to have shared that moment with him.  We will all miss Mark.

2004 TOP TEN FISH-ON'S

Frank Rogers, an Outer Banks fishing legend passed away on 10/28/04.  Frank was known to the small boat captains here on the beach as The All-Star.  At 70 years old Frank was still a die-hard fisherman.  You could not get The All-Star to cancel a trip regardless of how bad the weather was.  He would fish under any conditions.  He was saltiest man that ever stepped foot on my boat.  Frank was diagnosed with and had defeated Leukemia dating back to 1989.  You would have never known that he had it.  Frank treated cancer like he did bad weather.  He didn't let it phase him.  Frank died of a heart-attack, not cancer.  Chad Lilly, one of Frank's many fishing partners, put it best when he said that Frank beat cancer with a baseball bat.  I had the pleasure of fishing with Frank most recently during a September southwest gale.  Perfect Frank weather.  As always, Frank was just happy being on the water.  As usual he caught fish.  One could only hope to live half the life that Frank did.  R.I.P. Frank Rogers....
